More than four million women in the US will give birth this year and two out of three will experience low back pain during late stages of pregnancy. This is caused by a couple of factors. First, as your baby grows, your abdominal wall expands and becomes less effective at supporting your lower back. Additionally, your body is producing the hormone relaxin in ten times its normal concentration. This loosens the pelvis and joints in preparation for birth but can adversely affect other joints by creating inflammation.
The simple moves presented in this video will strengthen and stretch the muscles of your low back, open your hips, and oxygenate your blood. If you’re in your third trimester, try to incorporate them into your daily routine for a healthy and happy back all the way up to the big day!

This looks like such a great practice for expectant moms! I passed it along to a friend of mine who was looking for something just like this!
Thank you so much for this post. It came just at the right time, when I’m really starting to feel more pregnant! I’ll incorporate it regularly into my routine.
At 33 weeks, I’m starting to have some lower back pain at the end of every day. I just did this short series of poses and it’s amazing how much better I feel right now– way more dramatic results than the other night when I took Tylenol!
What a super idea to include expectant moms in your yoga series. Thanks for the easily followed demonstration by Yvette & Sarah.
This looks great for when I get that far. Do you have any advice for those of us who are still in the first trimester? Maybe something that could help with nausea?
Great advice. You should try to make this widely available.
Hello! I am a loyal yogatoday yogi, and I am now pregnant with twins! I’m still in my first trimester, but I would like to know, from my favorite instructors, what kind of prenatal yoga can I do that is safe?
Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you!
Michelle Bertone
Thank you very much for these exercises.
Further pregnancy yoga exercices would be much appreciated!
I wish you guys had more prenatal yoga on this site. I’m a loyal subscriber, but have had to go elsewhere for prenatal yoga during my pregnancy. I’ve missed you guys.
I love Yoga Today, but there don’t seem to be any prenatal yoga classes! I would love it if one of the instructors or someone could recommend a DVD or something to supplement the site during pregnancy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Thanks for this post! I’ve been doing yoga with yogatoday for over a year and am now pregnant. Any attention you can give to this special season of life would be appreciated!
I agree, I would love to see a prenatal class on here. especially from adi (my personal favorite).
I will not argue with your endings merely because I feel you’re proper on the money! You have place together a coherent case for your ideas and now I understand a little more this specific subject. Gives Thanks for this intelligent publish and that i restarted for much more.
Your post could be an inspiration for me to review much more relating to this subject. I should confess your readability broadened my sights and I will right away grab your rss or atom feed to be up to date on any succeeding content articles may write. You are due, thank you for a job nicely done!
